Sliding Phenomeno’s last chap in before continuing Zaregoto, also probably using a diff wiki script

Belatedly realized someone had commented a link to the last Phenomeno chap to me, so I’ll work on that before continuing Zaregoto. Probably over the weekend, as work’s been busy of late. As a reminder to myself > http://image.sai-zen-sen.jp/works/calendar/raven-notes/01/01.html

Also WikkaWiki’s been nice to me but the ACL is horrendous (yargh vandals), and the user extensions support for it is also horrendous, so I may be replacing it with something else (MediaWiki gives me permission issues when setting it up and I’m lazy). That may or may not change the URL of the wiki, depending on how I back up stuff, and/or the current wiki may go down for a bit when I work on transferring info.

Just an FYI post of sorts~ probably won’t have much time to do all this until the weekend but we’ll see.

Zaregoto 4-1 done

Chapters from now on become long, 40-page affairs, I think, so updates to this blog may be sparse, as I still intend to just post an ‘official update’ of sorts after each chap.

I guess I’ll do another informative/taking suggestions sort of post here. One of Nishio’s defining traits is how well he gives character to each character via speech mannerisms etc. I am, unfortunately, not very good at this in English. I am trying – one of the things with the Zaregoto series is how each character has at least two “modes”, so for instance with Ii-chan I refrain from using contractions unless he’s in an “angry” mode (in Japanese he goes from formal Japanese to slang-ish casual Japanese, and as with the translations he rarely does so, and it only lasts a few lines). With Hime-chan I tried to make liberal use of commas and “like” and and refrained from big words with the exception of her fail idioms, while swapping into formal, longer sentences with more accepting (often incorrect) usage of big words. I’m not sure I’m always doing it right or well, but I’m trying.

Problem is, though, that my cache of English speech mannerisms is not very big. I’m not really sure how to differentiate characters down the line. If anyone has suggestions, links for good reading, etc. I’m listening :3

Zaregoto v4 Prologue done

Fui~ that was long.

I figured I should explain a bit about my process here and why grammar/etc. is going to (always) be off.

It’s not that I’m particularly bad at grammar, but when I translate I tend to focus on speed… which is sort of what happens when your first five or so years of translating are with a scanslation group, where you always have a number of editors who’re going to edit your translations as they stick stuff in speech bubbles. I ended up having like this habit of assuming that someone else will go through and edit the translation, so translation > English readability.

I’m trying to do a better job of curbing the habit and proofreading as I go, but I’m still not giving it much time, and I have stretches where I’ll forget completely about proofreading as I translate.

I pondered whether it’d be better to go back and edit after each chapter etc. but part of me also felt like a good number of people would rather me get on with it instead of fiddling with stuff they’ve “already read,” even if readability/polish wasn’t really there.

I still don’t have a good solution to this. My original plan was to edit everything after I translated everything, but that’s going to be a long time down the road, and I honestly facedesk every time I go back and read over some of the stuff I’d translated… there’re so many small things here and there to fix every time I go back. I’m going to try to make a concerted effort to beat back the “if you have time to be editing you might as well be translating!” guy sitting on one of my shoulders and proofread better/in a more timely fashion. But just be aware that it’s still (currently) much lower on my priority list than “just translating the next chapter.” What sucks even more is that one of the guys who prodded me to translate this is being too lazy to edit! Hurr.

Anyways, thanks for understanding :3
